Ban on misleading advertising and vague, unsubstantiated environmental claims

The proposal предусматривает a ban on using general terms such as “environmentally friendly,” “natural,” “biodegradable,” “climate neutral,” or “eco” if they are not supported by specific evidence. Lawmakers propose that sustainability-related labels may only be used if they are based on official certification schemes or have been established by public authorities.

Ban on artificially shortening product lifespans

The aim of the directive is to extend the lifespan of products. This means that manufacturers will not be allowed to design products that break down shortly after the warranty period expires. Products should also function properly with interchangeable parts and consumables from other manufacturers. Consumers should be informed of any repair restrictions before making a purchase. In addition, lawmakers propose introducing a new warranty label that would indicate not only the duration of the warranty but also whether the manufacturer can extend it and for how long. This is intended to highlight product quality and encourage companies to place greater emphasis on product durability.

Next steps

Negotiations between the European Parliament and Member States on the final shape of the directive may begin soon. The directive is part of the first package related to the circular economy. The same package also includes, among others, a regulation on construction products and a report on sustainable textile products.
